opponents wrong. thanks to daniel inouye, hawaii has become a modern, prosperous state. many alaskans have a special fond unless for the 50th state, especially i have to say at this time of the year when it's 40 below in fairbanks. daniel inouye began his public career and service at the age of 17 when he entered the army after the attack on pearl harbor. he served with incredible distinction, earning the nation's highest military medal for action in italy. as a member of the senate, senator inouye continued his fierce defense of his state in his partnership with alaska. my preye predecessor, ted steve, knew senator inouye as his brother. they worked together and produced much good for both our states. that will last for generations. when i was elected to this office, senator inouye was one of the first members to reach out to me to ask how he could help. the unique thing about senator inouye was always his quiet approach to all the issues. he provided me quiet advice and helped me learn how this place works. many times i'd be down here at the podium and in the well here waiting for the vo

and acting tough when he was just away for week in hawaii. everyone deserves a nice christmas holiday but not when we have serious issues that need to be addressed. i don't think the president has led on this. the american people are also partly to blame here. there was an election and he left in place everything the same. the house is the same. senate is basically the same. you voted for basically more of the same. american people don't escape blame either. >> gregg: van hollen basically has the same argument, he has been out for 12 days and vanhollen, boehner would not touk talk to him. i'm not sure i buy that. if it does go to the fiscal cliff and we go over it, sequestration would cut only $109 billion next year. that is actually not a lot in a budget of almost four trillion, is it? >> it's not a lot of the total number, half of that goes to defense which are own admirals and generals have said and secretary of defense would be devastating. this comes on top of -- $50 billion in one year to the defense. and it doesn't touch at all medicare and the other entitlement programs. >> gr

and planning was to move to hawaii but apparently missed a flight over the weekend. life long dream of his. friend of his says roberts was depressed about a breakup with his girlfriend. the two may have been evicted in june from an apartment. there is also a report he quit his job at a sandwich job abruptly last month. the lone surviving gunshot victim, 15-year-old girl is lucky to be alive because the bullet passed through her back. but hit no vital organs. >> this caseua, we saw is that despite the bullet probably not penetrating her chest, it produces a large blast effect. i think most of her injuries were a result of the blast effect, result of a high velocity weapon. >> she is expected to fully recover. >> it probably saved a lot of lives. >> yeah. absolutely. we heard last night there were a couple of shots off the bat and then a pause. that pause may have given crucial time for people who are right in the food court to get away from the gunman. also the mall and the local police had practiced for a scenario just like what happened yesterday within the last year. cops were on the sce

that he was telling people in a he had inherited a bunch of money and planning to move to hawaii. apparently that's not grounded in any truth whatsoever. but you talk to all the people who knew him and they say this just doesn't sound like jacob roberts. and so at this point, it's just a real mystery. we're also getting more details in terms of the chronology in terms of how it occurred. we're told roberts entered the second floor of the macy's store, started firing actually in the food court area. and then within a minute, within one minute, police swarmed to the scene and when roberts felt like he was cornered, he went to the first floor, that and he where he shot himself. meantime, we're also hearing from someis of his friends. listen to someone who knew roberts from high school. >> he was a counseling aid with us. kids would sometimes be assigned to be our assistant and he helped us with some of the work in the counseling office. i found him to be a very polite young man, soft spoken, nice smile. and just really surprised that somebody with his personality would end up doing
